When I was younger, I was so conscious about my appearance. I obsessed over little things, like the brand of pants I wore and having the latest make-up products and styles. However, as I grew older, I realized that all those things don’t matter. What’s important is that I’m comfortable, I’m being myself and that the people around me love me for what I am.

Ladies, stop obsessing about your flaws, your gray hairs, blemishes, and any other thing that is holding you back. Instead, start thinking about bigger things that really impact your life, like your manners, your attitude and how mature you are in tolerating small stuff. Here are some things that mature women do that make them beautiful inside out and allow them to live their best life.

They Feel Complete

They have mastered loving themselves. They don’t beat themselves up when they make mistakes or when they fail to succeed in something because they are humble enough to admit that they are imperfect, wise enough to learn a lesson, and brave enough to move on. Also, they don’t need someone else to complete them or rely on others to fix them because they know how to take full responsibility of their own life and happiness.

In the piece “3 Things Dating a Jerk Taught Me About Self-Love And Maturity,” writer Anastasia Iliou explains the importance of seeing your value, respecting yourself, and understanding how incredible you are to be wasting your time with someone who just wants to sleep with you.

Ladies, you need to learn to love yourself in order to become a healthy and functioning adult. Don’t get stuck dating a jerk and find someone who treats you the way you truly deserve.

They Are In Touch With Reality

They don’t live in fantasyland anymore. In fact, they’re done with “happily ever after” and waiting for that knight in shining armor who will save the day all with just the swish of a wand. You know why? Because they understand that life is imperfect, that people, including themselves, have flaws, that things don’t always go according to plan, and that there are certain things in this world that they can’t control.

They may complain, whine, or even punch the wall, but at the end of the day, they go back to minding their own business and move on with their life. Let’s take the recent elections for example. If you’re upset with the results and feel that it will have a great impact on your business’ future, that’s alright. BUT you have to take back control of your emotions because you have a responsibility. People are relying on you and looking to you for their livelihoods. So, face reality, put your emotions aside and lead!

They Know That Happiness Comes From Within

They have the capacity to handle stress in ways that are not destructive to themselves and to others. They don’t let their emotions control them or determine for them what to do and what not to do. Also, they know how to find happiness in a book and a glass of wine, in a dog’s head on their lap, in watching the rain through their window or in quiet evenings with their loved ones.

Ladies, to be more mature, you have to realize that happiness is internal or something that you create for yourself. So, learn to be in charge of how you feel.

Writer Mark Denicola suggests doing these 5 quick techniques to break a persistent bad mood.

I practice the first item on the list. I’m an 80’s baby, so whenever I feel that my temper is about to get the best of me, you can judge me all you want, but it’s all about Michael Jackson and Madonna for me.

They Appreciate What They Have

I used to live in one of the most poverty stricken countries in the world. I’ve walked on narrow and dirty streets where beggars would sit and reach their hands out to ask for a few cents. I’ve witnessed impoverished families turn dumpsites into homes and leftover food scavenged from rubbish bins into a dinner feast. I’ve seen the poorest of the poor making their livelihood by picking up garbage and scraps.

You see, when you are aware of how hard life is for other people on this planet, you will stop complaining about your simple and nonsense problems. You won’t feel bad when you don’t get the latest iPhone for your birthday or when you can’t decide where to eat for lunch. You will realize how blessed and lucky you are for having all the things that you have.

Ladies, gratitude is a sign of maturity. So, learn to be thankful about the little things in your life. Instead of feeling sad that you can’t afford to go on that grandiose vacation in Italy or anywhere in the world, acknowledge that there are far worse things that could happen.

To cultivate gratitude every day, here’s a yoga practice that you can do that focuses on being thankful, for being present, and for the ability to do anything you set your mind to.
