To make an event more meaningful, some people choose to donate their birthdays or any special occasions in their lives for a cause. Instead of receiving personal gifts, the celebrant would ask their friends to make a pledge and raise money for the benefit of people who are in need.
This is exactly how a Turkish couple from the province of Kilis in the Syrian border decided to celebrate their wedding day. Fethullah Üzümcüoğlu and Esra Polat donated the savings their families had put together for their traditional two-day party to feed over 4,000 refugees living in the local community.
The idea of sharing their wedding celebration with those less fortunate came from the groom’s father, Ali Üzümcüoğlu, who is a Turkish charity Kimse Yok Mu (KYM) volunteer. In an interview with a local newspaper, he encouraged other families to do the same and spend time with their Syrian brothers and sisters.
