With the all the various therapies out there to help us reduce our stress level, you’d think we’d be a less stressed out society. However, as our schedules get busier and crazier and our minds fill up with more noise, relaxing seems more like a luxury than mandatory.

Just recently I bought myself a folk art coloring book  as a way to zone out and just look at pretty patterns. The more I colored, the less stressed I felt. Maybe there is something to this, I thought to myself. Low and behold, I soon find out that colorful art books for adults are actually a thing.

So why are coloring books all of a sudden so popular for adults? My guess is that is makes us feel like children again. Remember how carefree you might have felt in kindergarten when you only had a bird to paint as actual homework while your older siblings mulled over algebra? Well, now you can relive that fantasy again. Instead of stealing your child’s coloring book for fun, now you can proudly own one of your own.

People all over the world are now discovering the therapeutic benefits of coloring books and here are some reasons why you might want to pick up a copy of your own!

#1) There’s Literally No Thinking Involved

Coloring book therapy offers a way to unwind and get in touch with your inner artist without much thought to it.  It provides a way to relax, which would save about as much money as a session with a psychiatrist. The great thing about coloring books are the tiny details that allow for one to really get into their work and spend hours on it.

The minute designs and geometric patterns are designed for adult hands, making it too difficult for children to mess around with it, a great thing if you prefer your books to be hands off. The trend has taken over in the past few years and many people are finding that coloring books have completely transformed their stress level and thought process.

#2) Creativity Is Just Child’s Play

If you’ve put off your creative side for a while or you would like to try your hand at art, then adult coloring books are for you. With each detailed design, the possibilities are endless.

Once thought of as just for children, coloring provides meditative and quiet activity that releases your mind and just allows you to go with the flow. Besides the therapeutic benefits of coloring, adults are able to regenerate motor skills and reactivate parts of the brain that have lied dormant for years.

According to psychologist, Gloria Martínez Ayala, “When coloring, we activate different areas of our two cerebral hemispheres. The action involves both logic, by which we color forms, and creativity, when mixing and matching colors. This incorporates the areas of the cerebral cortex involved in vision and fine motor skills. The relaxation that it provides lowers the activity of the amygdala, a basic part of our brain involved in controlling emotion that is affected by stress.”

#3) Do Something Good For Yourself

One of the top bestsellers on Amazon.com are adult coloring books.  Although I stumbled on the trend, it truly does wonders for my ability to concentrate and think outside the box. I am an artist at heart, so getting in a bit of creativity out of my system always makes me happy. I love color and having an outlet to express myself helps me to keep my artistic juices flowing, so to speak.

If you feel stumped on an idea or are plagued by a racing mind, then coloring books are great tools to use when you need to decompress. Children don’t worry as much as us adult do and there’s no better way than to bring out your inner child than do sometimes do things that you have long forgotten.

Although the trend is just now becoming popular, coloring books for adults have been around for quite some time now and probably won’t be going anywhere anytime soon, especially with their promising benefits. Everyone deserves a break and so do you. I suggest you try some out for yourself!

do you have an inner artist waiting to come out or have you been stressed lately? Coloring books are a fun way to gain more creative edge and mindless possibilities. Have you tried them out?
