We all have different resolutions and expectations for the impending New Year. Because of that, 2014 will come bearing changes for all of us. Let’s take a look at what kinds of small business ideas will be big in 2014.
#1) Desktop Publishing And Design
If you have a good printer at home, you could go into desktop publishing. Flyers, brochures, ads, and business cards are always going to be in use. Not only that but you also have the option of printing photographs and artwork. You can even venture out and do custom framing options if you’re feeling a little froggy.
This small business idea doesn’t really see the light of day because most people just go to their local office supply store for their printing needs. The waiting-in-line can be ridiculous though.
In order to be successful in this business you’ll need a printer (a great one), different kinds of paper and cardstock, and a website. Build a great list of personal references (you can easily get that by doing some small projects for free or for a small fee). A paper-cutter would be handy as well. If you’re artistic, creative, and have a good eye for design, you could even put up your own templates on your website.
#2) Cosmetics Sales Representative
We’re always going to need to look good. While the definition of “looking good” may change over the years, personal care and hygiene will never be “so last season.” Because of that, being a Cosmetics Sales Representative could be the job for you. It’s always in demand because of our need for personal care.
Avon and Mary Kay are two of the biggest companies to look into. While they may have been known for their products that are geared toward women, they are coming out with products geared toward men now too. If you are a hard worker, good at developing relationships with people, and excellent at networking, one of these companies can be your ticket to a great career.
You don’t even need to know a lot about beauty products and personal care items because they offer training for those who need a crash course in those departments.
#3) House or Pet Sitting
House or pet-sitting might not be a glamorous business endeavor but it can be a profitable one. No matter the economy or the state of affairs, everyone just needs to get away sometimes. Because of this, there will always be a need for house sitters. Even if it’s just for the weekend, while they visit their parents or if they’re going to Europe for a week, there will always be a need to watch over each other’s belongings.
In order for this small business idea to become an actual small business, you’re going to need a bonding certification to guard against damaged property (if there is a burglary, or if a tree falls on their shed). Also, it would be in your best interest to start building a great website and to get some personal references.
#4) New Mobile Devices
When you are starting your new business, remember that new, better, faster mobile devices are coming out on the market every day. If you don’t consider this when you are building your website, you could be losing a big chunk of your audience and your potential customers.
Remember that this can be a business tool as well. Your phone will be your mobile office. So if you do a lot of selling online, I would invest in a good Smartphone that can keep up with your busy, business lifestyle. There are a lot of apps that can help you with accounting, productivity, travel, networking, and management (of your products, people, and your tools).
#5) Social Listening
Also, don’t forget social networks that will help you business grow. Certain markets can be targeting through your connections via social networking. If you are offering a product (clothing, apps, accessories, etc.), your brand could explode on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Google+.
In order to have a successful small business idea for 2014, you have to look at the current trends. What is be in your generation or the generation after yours (that should be your target audience/market)? What are people doing in their spare time? What can help them at work? What can you offer them?
If you aren’t fond of these small business ideas then try to find one that fits a passion of yours. A big part of a successful business is the passion, that you have in you, for your product or service. Your passion will be contagious.
