Ladies, we are all looking for that beautiful bronze, and healthy glow. However, with what we are learning about skin cancer, free radicals, and the dangers of tanning, it can be difficult to understand what the best course of action is for our skin in the summer.
If you are all about lounging around poolside in the summer, you know the dangers the sun can pose to your skin and your overall health. However, if you love the natural tan look and you understand the price your health pays in a tanning bed, you know that the options you are faced with can both be likened to the edges of a single sword.
So, if you want that healthy glow this summer, but you need to know how to protect your skin, check out these ways to help you get everything you want while you avoid making your health pay the price.
#1) Wear Sunscreen
It seems kind of weird to suggest wearing sunscreen while you are tanning. Well, it is and it isn’t. What a lot of women don’t know is that they can still get tan when they wear sunscreen. It doesn’t necessarily stop them from bronzing! This is great news!
It is essential to wear sunscreen year-round. However, most of us only use it in the summer time. Well, ladies, the next time you go poolside, make sure you are carrying a bottle of SPF with you.
According to Lizette Borreli of medicaldaily.com, “Remember to apply SPF 15 to 30 minutes before you go in the sun, reapply 15 to 30 minutes after you have been exposed to the sun, and only reapply if you have done any aquatic activity where your sunscreen could have been removed.”
Depending on what part of the country you live in, your SPF levels should be no less than 15. I recommend an SPF 30 or SPF 40 to help you keep your skin protected while you are basking in the rays.
The great thing about sunscreen is that it protects your skin, but it also offers you the chance to get a more even tan. The slower you roast a chicken, the more even its golden brown skin turns!
The same concept can be applied to your skin. By applying sunscreen evenly, you will have a greater chance of keeping your skin even as the sun passes overhead.
#2) Keep Your Skin Healthy Out Of the Sun
A great way to think of having a healthy tan is to think of how you keep your skin healthy every day. Not only does your skin need to be washed and exfoliated throughout the year, it needs to go through the same routines when you are working on your tan.
It is recommended that you exfoliate in the morning before you get in the sun. This will get rid of the dry or dead skin on your body and help you maintain that healthy glow that you see on celebrities. Additionally, removing dead skin will help you keep your tan even—which is a great way to show off your seamless skin in the summer!
Also, according to Alexia Severson of healthline.com, “A good evening cleansing routine is just as important as your morning cleansing routine when trying to achieve your most radiant skin tone.”
So make sure you clean your skin after you are out tanning. Not only does the sunscreen, tanning oil, and dirt of the outside leave you feeling sticky and unclean, it can also clog your pores leading to acne all over your body!
Keeping a healthy skin routine for the morning and the night can help you show off your healthy tan and keep a radiant glow about you, even when you aren’t in the sun!
Use moisturizers to help your skin stay healthy throughout the summer. The healthier your skin is, the longer you will be able to keep your beautiful bronze glow!
#3) Do Not Over-Expose Your Skin
As always, ladies, it is essential that you avoid over-exposing your skin to the elements. Going out without sunscreen can cause sunburns that can leave some nasty marks on you throughout the summer and sometimes even permanently.
I know it seems like you have a great technique by getting your first burn of the summer then living the good life as a tan goddess in the months afterward; however, this can really become harmful to your skin after time, so do be careful with how long you are out in the sun, and always make sure to reapply sunscreen if you cannot control how long you are in the sun.
Be sure to have a timer or alarm clock near you while you are lounging by the pool, because we all know how rest and relaxation can be a huge factor in losing track of time!
Additionally, over-exposing your skin can often lead to dry, patchy skin, which can make it more difficult to maintain a beautiful tan.
We all want that beautiful tan, ladies! This year, make sure you protect your skin and your health following some simple steps. Always be sure to wear sunscreen (even if your goal is to get as dark as possible), make sure you don’t stay in the sun too long, and keep your skin healthy with your cleansing routines in the morning and at night.
