What To Wear To A Fashion Job Interview

When you’re interviewing for a job in the fashion industry, or a fashion internship, you need to take your wardrobe even more seriously than someone interviewing to work in the regular old corporate world! If you’re going to be working with clothes, you need to show the people hiring you that you know how to dress well!

Do Some Research

The first step in figuring out what to wear to your interview is to do some research! If your interview is with a fashion house, know their style aesthetic and attempt to show them that you fit with their brand. Don’t wear their label head to toe, but take note of what the designer’s style is and attempt to show them that you understand it.

If you’re interviewing with a fashion magazine, you should dress more ‘trendy’ than normal to show that you understand current fashion. Don’t be over-the-top though: you still need to look professional. Even though it might be a dream job, it’s still a job! Remember that when you’re getting dressed for it.

What Are They Wearing In The Stores?

Also, this sounds obvious but can sometimes get overlooked: take note of what the staff wear in the retail stores. Also don’t blatantly dress in competitors clothes. If possible, try to wear something from the brand or label, or wear the season’s current look. It can be expensive to buy the clothes from the company that you are interviewing for, but it can have a significant impact on your interview success.

Your interviewer will be asking themselves- ”can I see this person working for our company? Is this person’s style the same as what our brand represents?”. So needles to say, if you are wearing their current clothing line, and styled appropriately to the brands look, the interviewer will see that you will fit in perfectly with the brand.

So, if it’s a young edgy brand, dress young edgy, if it’s classic and tailored, where a suit, and it’s not unheard of to wear jeans when interviewing at a denim company.

If you are new to the industry or interviewing for a lower level position, do not worry if you don’t have high-end designer duds for your interview. Nobody expects a 23 year old to be wearing Prada!

Would Dad Approve?

The only traditional “interview rule” in dressing which still applies to the fashion industry is: do not show too much skin: so basically, no cleavage, no micro-minis, no short-shorts.

A good rule of thumb is, if there is any way your outfit would cause your father to take a second glance, you need to change!

Remember: Fashion is visual. Fashion communicates a message. So this is vital that you get your outfit planned correctly for each company that you go for a fashion job interview with. Presentation counts almost as equal to your resume!
